Loughborough University FC thanks Enterprise Office for its support
L-R Andrew Bowler, Operations Manager, Innovation Centre; Tom Curtis, Loughborough Students Head Coach; and Phill Dickens, Pro Vice Chancellor (Enterprise) Loughborough University
On winning its last six league games, Loughborough University FC paid tribute to the University’s Enterprise Office that has sponsored the team for its first season in the Midland Alliance. A difficult debut season at this level had seen plenty of ups and downs in another fantastic campaign for the students.
The only team in the league not to pay its players wages had seen an encouraging early start slip away mid way through the year. Results had not been going well and the student side was dragged into relegation trouble around Christmas.
“Performances were always encouraging around this time, we just missed out at crucial moments in games,” reflected John Duncan, Manager and former boss of Ipswich, Scunthorpe and Chesterfield.
Injuries to key players Mat Aldred, Loughborough’s first ever full international Futsal player, and Robert Lyall, a student International, provided opportunities for youngsters to stake their place in the team.
“Loughborough football has always been about development and opportunity” commented Loughborough’s Head Coach Tom Curtis, “players like Jordan Deidrick, Nick Cavey and Lyson Zulu have all come into our non league side this year from third and fourth teams, and have been able to play and develop. The experience has meant that they are now equipped to compete at this level, either for us next year or somewhere else once they graduate.”
“This is an exciting time for Loughborough Football” Club President and ambassador Pete Simmons stated. “The support from the Enterprise Office has been invaluable, the development programme here at Loughborough football is extremely grateful for its sponsorship in association with the University’s Innovation Centre.”
“The Innovation Centre has a reputation for nurturing ambitious businesses and helping them achieve their potential. We’ve been proud to support the students in their ambitious campaign,” added Loughborough University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Enterprise) Professor Phill Dickens. The team’s strong finish to the season is all the more impressive as most of its key players are still in full time education next season.”
The pre season starts in only a few weeks time, with friendlies planned against Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Spurs, and the season getting underway in earnest on 7 August at Nanpantan Sports Ground.
