Popular TV personality Des Coleman will be the special guest at The Big Bang East Midlands fair, which this year is being hosted by Loughborough University.

Des is best known for his entertaining weather forecasts on BBC East Midlands TV, as well as his frequent appearances on the national BBC programme The One Show.

On Wednesday 7 July he will be joining hundreds of school pupils from across the region at The Big Bang East Midlands, a free annual event that celebrates science and engineering and is aimed exclusively at children and young people.

The fair is being supported by EngineeringUK, the British Science Association and Young Engineers, in partnership with Government, industry and the science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) community.  Its main aim is to ignite young people’s interest in STEM and inspire them to follow careers in this rewarding field.  It is open to 11 to 18 year-olds who have completed a project or activity in any of the STEM areas.  All entrants will have their own stand to present their work, which will be judged by industry and University experts.  Prizes will be awarded and the most impressive entries will go on to compete at the National Science and Engineering Competition taking place in 2011.

The Big Bang East Midlands is being organised by the University’s Engineering and Science Faculties.  Outside the judging the event will also feature a whole host of fun and engaging hands-on activities and workshops.  Below are details of just some of the exciting sessions taking place:
