Loughborough Students receive international rugby call-ups

Phil Burgess in action

Eight Loughborough Students rugby players have been named in elite England and USA squads as the University’s best prepare to represent their country in a series of fixtures over the coming months.

Loughborough number eight Phil Burgess has been called on to captain the 26-man England Students squad and is joined in the final line-up by fellow University forwards Matt Berry, George Thomas, Will Warden, Jon Aston and scrum half Will Chudley.

Finalist and back row player Burgess returns to the national squad for the second season, as
Loughborough’s forwards dominate selection with five of the University’s first team pack named in the final squad.

All players are part of the University’s successful RFU National 2 North squad which is currently sitting eight points clear at the top of the table after an impressive 14 wins from 17 so far this season.

Loughborough Students lead video analyst Dan Maisey will also join the team, providing valuable technical support and feedback. The Students’ first match of the season is away to World Cup team Portugal on Saturday 30 January.

Student second row Charlie Matthews has been named in a 32-man England U20 Elite Player Squad preparing for the forthcoming RBS U20 Six Nations and this summer's IRB Junior World Championship. For the second year running England U20s will take on Loughborough Students in May as a warm-up for the Worlds.

Further afield, student Zach Test has been selected for the USA Sevens squad to play in IRB World Series competitions in Fiji, Wellington and Las Vegas.

Loughborough’s coaches have also achieved international call-ups, with scrum half and development team coach Harry Ellis named in the England Six Nations squad and performance squad coach Ben Woods selected for the England Saxons.

Loughborough Students head coach Dave Morris is delighted with his team’s achievements.

“It’s great to see such a fantastic representation for England from Loughborough Students players and coaches,” he said. “Leicester Tigers players Ben Woods and Harry Ellis along with Boris Stankovitch have been a great addition to the coaching team.

“Ben is now in his second season coaching at Loughborough Students and has been instrumental in taking our defence and contact skills to the next level. Harry joined us this year delivering scrum half clinics and coaching the development side.

“Both players have been very generous with their time working with individual players and going through matches on DVD. Their attention to detail and insight they have brought has really accelerated the learning of the players and fellow coaches.

“The club is extremely proud of the players selected for the England Students and U20s teams. It is a reflection on how hard they have worked in the rugby programmes at Loughborough University, at partner clubs and in previous school or club rugby education prior to coming here.

“I’m particularly pleased for Phil Burgess to have the honour of captaining his country.”
