New school is up and running

SSEHS officially opened

School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences officially opened today

Loughborough University's School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences (SSEHS) has officially opened its doors today.

The new school, which sees the amalgamation of most of the former Human Sciences department with the existing School of Sport and Exercise Sciences (SSES), will strengthen research and innovation across sport, physical activity and health, bringing academics in related areas of research together.

SSEHS boasts 76 academic staff and will offer exciting new module choices for students over the coming years.

Head of School Professor Myra Nimmo is excited about the strengthening of expertise and new collaborative projects that will happen as the new school takes shape.

“SSEHS brings together those people with similar research and teaching interests,” explains Professor Nimmo. “We’re building up strength and depth in aspects of health, spanning from health during the life course to the health of elite athletes.

“Physical activity is very much on the national agenda and we hope to continue to support and inform national, international and regional guidelines, policies and best practice in this area.

“Over the years SSES has started to undertake more work which relates to health as well as to pure sport. This has given us closer links with human sciences and so it was logical to pull these elements all under one umbrella.

“This is just the start and it’s going to take time for us to cultivate a new way of working and bring the right people together for collaborative projects. It won’t happen overnight but we’re working on identifying appropriate research themes and pulling together colleagues in related areas.

“It’s a very exciting time for myself and everyone involved with the new school.”

SSEHS was officially launched back in May by HRH The Princess Royal alongside the opening of the school's state-of-the-art Clyde Williams building.
