Loughborough revs up for Formula Student

Formula Student

The 2009 LU Motorsport car

Loughborough University students are gearing up to take on the rest of the world at the Formula Student UK event from 16-19 July.

The competition, which will take place at Silverstone, is Europe’s largest educational motorsport event, with 105 universities from 23 countries taking part, including teams from as far a field as India and Canada.

Formula Student aims to develop engineering excellence, with entrants producing and designing a single-seater racing car, as well as demonstrating their management, marketing and interpersonal skills.

LU Motorsport have again entered a car for the competition, with Loughborough one of the only universities in the UK to design and build a car in one academic year. LU Motorsport is a collaboration between the departments of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering and the Department of Materials, although students from other departments can apply to be part of the LU Motorsport team.

As well as being tested for acceleration, endurance and fuel economy at the Formula Student event, the car will also be scored on a number of ‘static’ elements, including design, cost and the presentation of a business plan.

Loughborough’s car for this year’s event has changed significantly from the entry for 2008. As well as being different aerodynamically, it is also 25KG lighter and more fuel efficient. LU Motorsport, led by team leader Gareth Stanley, will also take part in Formula Student events in August at Hockenheim in Germany and Melk in Austria.

Loughborough University has a long and proud tradition of producing graduates who forge out successful careers in professional motorsport. These include Rob Smedley, Filipe Massa’s race engineer for Ferrari, and Neil Oatley, the Design and Development Director for the McLaren Formula One team.

Scot Layton, Faculty Advisor for LU Motorsport, believes that Formula Student provides an excellent opportunity for the students to showcase their talent.

“Every single member of LU Motorsport has worked very hard over the course of the academic year from the development to the production of the car, along with all of the other work involved in Formula Student.

“The project encourages teamwork and the very best engineering minds. We’re going up against some of the best universities in the world in this field, which can only stand our team in good stead for their future careers.”
