Loughborough holds honorary degree ceremonies

Loughborough University will be holding two special honorary degree ceremonies on 18 July as part of the Centenary celebrations.

The event, which is unique in higher education in the UK, will see alumni from as long ago as the 1930s invited back to Loughborough to be recognised for their contribution to the University as it is today.

All former students, who received a diploma at one of the University’s constituent colleges before full degree-awarding powers were bestowed, have been invited back to campus to receive an honorary BA or BSc as part of the celebrations.

Over 1,000 alumni have already confirmed their attendance for the July event, with former students travelling from as far as Pakistan and Canada to receive the honour. Due to demand for the event, further honorary degree ceremonies are due to be held in December. Alumni who have been lucky enough to secure a place will also have the opportunity to tour the campus, visit departments and meet up with old friends.

The event has been organised jointly by the Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO) and the Academic Registry.

As soon as alumni heard of this ceremony they started to send anecdotes, memories and memorabilia, providing a fascinating window onto the development of the University and the changing lives of Loughborough students over the decades. Much of this material will be displayed on the day.

Loughborough University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Shirley Pearce, said: “I am delighted that we are able to recognise the history of the University as well as the contribution and
accomplishments of our former students in this way.”

“I am very pleased that the response has been so great that we are now holding an additional event in December.  This underlines the unprecedented interest in the honorary graduation ceremonies by our alumni, who have sent us scores of letters telling us how delighted they are to be invited back to the University.”
