Loughborough scientist exhibits at Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition

Researchers from Loughborough University will be presenting their work at the Royal Society’s Summer Exhibition, which opens today.

Dr Sandie Dann, from the Department of Chemistry, has been researching how zeolites, or ‘holey rocks’, can be developed and used for a broad range of applications and materials that can change the way we live.

The work is a collaborative research project between Loughborough University and the University of Southampton.

“Zeolites have hidden roles in the production and function of many consumer products, but are generally unrecognised by the public,” said Dr Dann.

“By understanding their structure and creating new synthetic zeolites, we can expand their uses to create the next generation processes and products to improve our lives and environment.”

Zeolites are materials and natural minerals with porous, cage-like structures. They can perform in ion exchange, filtering, odour removal, chemical sieving and gas absorption. They are already used in many everyday products, such as washing powder and air fresheners. With the testing of existing zeolites and the creation of new ones, these ‘holey rocks’ can help create new processes for cleaner fuel, targeted drug delivery and specialist colour-changing optical materials.

The Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition runs from Tuesday, 30 June to Saturday, 4 July at the Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of science, in London.

This year, 23 interactive exhibits will be on show, presenting the best of UK science, engineering and technology. During the four days of the event, more then 4000 people are expected to take up the opportunity to explore the exhibition.
