University Community Donations Fund launched

Community groups and organisations across Charnwood are set to benefit from the launch of Loughborough University’s Community Donations Fund.

In a pilot project immediately open for bids, £10,000 is being made available in two support categories:  An Inside-out Fund of £5,000 where University staff involved in community groups can bid for amounts of up to £500 and an Open Fund also of £5,000 available for bids from any community group in amounts up to £500.

In the academic year starting from October 2009, a total of £25,000 will be available in the fund.  The full year will see four support categories in operation with a Strategic Fund and Education Fund being added to the Inside Out Fund and Open Fund.  The Strategic Fund of £10,000 will be allocated as one or two sums following a review of local needs and as part of a strategic engagement.  The Education Fund of £5,000 will be used to support projects in educational contexts, local schools etc, in amounts of up to £1,000.

In order to be considered for support from the donations fund, projects/organisations must be Charnwood based and non political in nature.  In addition, only specific or identifiable projects will be considered, rather than, for example, administration costs.  The University would look particularly favourably on projects or activities that increase engagement between the University and community.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Shirley Pearce comments:  “We are absolutely delighted to be able to offer this fund to community groups and organisations across Charnwood and to our staff.  It is important to us that as well as offering quality teaching to our students and significant research to the wider world, we also contribute to the social well being of Loughborough and the wider Charnwood region.  It is part of our strategy to be a good citizen.

“Our students already undertake a significant amount of volunteering in the community and our facilities are already well used by local people but this fund is a great new way for the University to help where help is needed and we are very much looking forward to being able to assist in this way.”

Neil Lambert, Chief Executive of Voluntary Action Charnwood is acting as an adviser to the fund and comments:  “I welcome this further initiative of good citizenship to benefit local people and communities.  I encourage local groups to apply and look forward to increased co-operation between University staff and local volunteering opportunities.”

Bids for the Open Fund and Inside Out Fund should be submitted to the University in writing by Friday 17 July.  They should be on a single side of A4 and should explain the nature and status of the community group or organisation, the activity for which funding is required, the amount applied for and appropriate contact details. They should be sent to: Maria Lahetko-Davies by email: M.Lahetko-Davies@lboro.ac.uk or by post to: Maria Lahetko-Davies, Marketing and Communications Office, Rutland Building, Loughborough University, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 3TU.
