Entrepreneurial students fly flag for Loughborough at the SIFE UK National Competition

A group of enterprising students from Loughborough University made it to the semi-finals of the recent SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) National Competition.

SIFE is a worldwide, non profit making organisation that allows university students to use their talents and abilities to work on community projects that change lives.  Every year, SIFE UK holds a national competition at which each university team presents its projects, along with evidence of their impact, to a panel of judges from a range of industries.

Loughborough's Steven Holmes, Mark Randhawa, Rose-Marie Almond, Robert Stokes, James Connolly and Mike Colyer travelled to Canary Wharf on 22 April to present their four SIFE projects, which involved:

The Loughborough team beat 34 other UK universities to gain a place in the semi-finals alongside Nottingham, Bath and Aston universities.

The team also went on to win the Wilkinson Entrepreneurship Individual Topic Competition for their work with the Mobile Phone Centre, beating 10 other teams to the £500 cash prize.

Loughborough’s SIFE team president, Steven Holmes, said: “We’re really pleased to have made it through to the semi-finals.  It’s great recognition of the value of the work we’re doing.”

Marina Pickles, SIFE Loughborough University Advisor, was in London with the team.  She said: “SIFE is a really worthwhile initiative for students to get involved in.  Not only do they get to work on projects that really do change people’s lives, it’s also a great way to develop really important work-related skills like communication, entrepreneurialism, team working and leadership skills.  I’m so proud of what the team has achieved over the past year, culminating in a really successful day at the awards.”

Loughborough's Vice Chancellor, Professor Shirley Pearce, said "The University was delighted to hear the SIFE Loughborough team did so well in the competition".
