Loughborough Students join forces with Nottingham & Union Rowing Club

Loughborough University’s rowing club has formed a partnership with Nottingham & Union Rowing Club that will help its elite students access quality training facilities at the side of the River Trent.

The deal will see many of the students training out of the Nottingham club, which is one of the oldest rowing clubs in Britain with its roots dating back to 1862.

Loughborough’s rowing programme has gone from strength to strength since the appointment of its first ever full-time coach Mitch Rosenlund two years ago and now boasts over 120 members from elite athletes to rowing novices.

Last year rowing became one of the University’s performance sports and the club has subsequently gone on to achieve its best ever results with its highest finish at the national student championships and its first ever win at the Women’s Henley Regatta.

Also last year students Pete Muhley, Ed Whitely and Callum Brown, none of whom had rowed before studying at Loughborough, were selected onto GB Rowing’s World Class Start programme.

The trio are part of the University’s performance squad, which is set to benefit most from the new deal. The students will be able to use Nottingham & Union’s fully equipped gym, ergo balcony and rowing tank and have access to their boats for training.

“Nottingham & Union represents the future for Loughborough rowing,” said Loughborough head coach Rosenlund. “Thanks to the help and support of Nottingham & Union the University rowing programme now has a place to call home.

“Not only will our elite students be able to use the extensive facilities at Nottingham, but we have also formed a high performance men’s squad with the elite Nottingham & Union rowers who, for the next five months, will be focussed towards a victory at the Henley Royal Regatta.

“This wouldn’t have happened without the vision of Trevor Rainbow and the support of the Nottingham & Union President and his committee. It’s an honour to join with such a long-established club.”

Nottingham & Union coach Rainbow first approached the students when he saw them making vast improvements on the Trent. “I could see the University rowers coming on development-wise in massive leaps and I thought they would out-grow their existing set-up very quickly,” he said. “The partnership is a good opportunity for them to have a real home and for us to invest in the future of the Nottingham & Union club.

“It’s still very early for us both, but already we’re seeing more people at the club more often – the students are bringing a real energy. Longer-term we were looking at achieving some synergy between elite rowers at both clubs and putting out joint teams, but this has already happened and it’s a very exciting time for us all with the six men training for Henley.”

As well as rowing on the Trent, Loughborough Students will continue to train on the 2km course at Nottingham’s Holme Pierrepont, with novices also using the Loughborough Boat Club.
