Festival of Science

Six of Loughborough University’s top professors, all world-leading in their areas of science, are gearing up to present lectures at Loughborough Town Hall tomorrow (Saturday, 7 March) as part of the ‘Festival of Science’.

Held as part of National Science and Engineering week, as well as the University’s Centenary celebrations, the event starts at 9.55am and is free to anyone wishing to attend.

Members of the public are able to attend as many of the presentations as they wish. At the end of each presentation, there will be opportunities for questions followed by a short break. Seats will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

The full programme is as follows:

9.55am - Welcome from Professor Ken Parsons, Dean of Science

10am - 'Weird Science' - Dr Klaus Neumann, Department of Physics

11am - 'Life, The Universe and Everything' - Professor Stephen Fletcher, Department of Chemistry

12noon - 'Why Sleep?' - Professor Jim Horne, Sleep Research Centre

2pm - 'Bras to Bridges or Why Bras don’t work' - Professor John Tyrer, Faculty of Engineering

3pm - 'From Pottery to Scramjets: Advanced Ceramics in the Modern World' - Professor Jon Binner, Department of Materials 

4pm - 'Dumb Computers, Clever Programs and Innovative Applications' - Professor Paul Chung, Department of Computer Science
