Loughborough to host the 2011 UK Corporate Games

Loughborough University has been chosen to host the 2011 UK Corporate Games, Europe’s largest corporate multi-sports festival.

Thousands of competitors, who work for businesses and organisations of all types and sizes across the UK, will compete in 23 sports, ranging from badminton and basketball to dragon boat racing and dominoes. The Games bring businesses together to build employee confidence, loyalty and team spirit.

Loughborough’s bid was successfully made through a partnership between the University, Charnwood Borough Council and Leicestershire County Council.

Tim Garfield, the University’s Deputy Direct of Sport, says Loughborough is delighted to be hosting the event. “Loughborough is a perfect venue for the Games. Our world class sports facilities and our award-winning catering and residential experience will ensure competing teams enjoy a unique experience. They will be utilising the same facilities that are being used to prepare our Olympics-bound swimmers, athletes and triathletes and staying in the same accommodation as the Japanese Olympic team who are partnering with Loughborough in their preparation for London 2012.”

Cllr David Parsons, leader of Leicestershire County Council, added: “These Games will not only showcase the exemplar facilities at Loughborough University, they will also provide an opportunity for corporate leaders, from all of the country, to see firsthand what a great place Charnwood, Leicestershire is to do business in.”

Leader of Charnwood Borough Council Mike Preston commented: “Loughborough is renowned for its sporting excellence and its facilities and it seems fitting that the UK Corporate Games will be held here. We are looking forward to hosting what will be an exciting event and welcome the boost it will bring to the town.”

Dr Maureen Johnston, President of Sport For Life Ltd and founder of the UK Corporate Games, added: “We are delighted that Loughborough will host the UK Corporate Games in 2011.  The Games’ unmistakable reputation for sport, business and networking makes it a unique event, complex in its preparation with over 4,000 athletes competing from over 200 organisations across a 4-day event."

While on campus, the competitors will be able to take advantage of the four star accommodation and catering offered through imago, the award-winning meeting and conference venue at Loughborough University.

Kay England, Chief Executive of imago at Burleigh Court and Holywell Park, said: “We hope that the high level of service imago offers as standard across the whole of the campus will help the guests to get the most out of the Games."

Dr Johnston added that the accommodation provision and flexible catering solutions, together the University’s first-class sporting facilities and its central location, will provide an outstanding platform for the Games.

“It creates a perfect environment for businesses to interact both on and off the field and we are confident that imago’s support will ensure a spectacular first UK Corporate Games for the Midlands and a real boost for both local and national businesses,” she said.

The 2010 UK Corporate Games will take place in Liverpool from 13 to 16 May.
