CICE receives further funding

Loughborough University’s Centre in Innovative and Construction Engineering (CICE) has secured funding for a further five years from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

The funding will enable the Centre, which is committed to advanced training and research in engineering and management, to recruit another 50 students for its renowned Engineering Doctorate programme (EngD).

The Engineering Doctorate Centre at CICE was recently celebrated at a conference by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, which highlighted much of the success achieved by CICE since the Centre was launched in 1999.

The event, which was attended by over 40 senior people from the construction industry, coincided with a report sponsored by CICE entitled ‘Innovation Process in the Construction Sector’ by John Findlay, the ex-Chairman of CICE’s Management Board, which highlights the views from within the construction sector concerning innovation and associated research and development.

One of the EPSRC’s flagship programmes, CICE is open to graduates in any branch of engineering or applied science. It is the only centre of its kind in the country devoted to meeting the research and training needs of the construction industry.

The Engineering Doctorate programme is designed to produce doctoral graduates who can drive innovation in the engineering industry, with the highest level of technical, managerial and business competence. A four-year programme, many CICE alumni had gone on to achieve high-level positions in the construction industry.

Professor Dino Bouchlaghem, Director of CICE, said: “CICE has been particularly successful in bridging the gap between research and practice by supporting industry-based research, as well as providing an effective mechanism for practitioners and academics to work closely to resolve the fundamental problems facing the industry.

“The Centre will continue to build on the considerable success of the last ten years by further developing its industry base, extending the reach and impact of its activities, and consolidating its position as the only doctoral training centre fully focused on the built environment.

“Our vision is for CICE to continue to evolve as an established centre of excellence for doctoral training and applied research within the industry.”
