Staff and students from Loughborough University and the Mayor of Charnwood will process through Loughborough town centre this coming weekend in a re-enactment of ‘College Sunday’ – an historic event held for over 40 years to mark the start of each new academic year.

‘College Sunday’ was introduced by Herbert Schofield, Principal of Loughborough College from 1915 to 1950, to give the institution a more traditional character. The first procession was held in November 1920, with subsequent events taking place each year on the third Sunday in October until 1962.

The re-enactment is being held as part of the University’s Centenary celebrations.

Dr Anne Mumford, who is leading the Centenary programme, says ‘College Sunday’ was a very grand affair. “All staff and students were required to wear academic dress for the procession, which went from the College in Greenclose Lane to the Parish Church of All Saints with Holy Trinity at the corner of Steeple Row and Church Gate,” she says.

“They carried the College Mace through the streets, and Herbert Schofield invited lots of eminent clerics to preach at the service – the first speaker was the Dean of Westminster. They even had their own College Hymn!”

This year’s re-enactment procession will take place on Sunday 25 October, leaving the Town Hall at 10am. It will make its way to All Saints with Holy Trinity Parish Church where, at 10.30am, a service will be held, conducted by the Reverend Rachel Ross, Rector of the Parish Church, and the Reverend Simon Richardson of the Loughborough University and Colleges Chaplaincy. The service will be addressed by the Reverend Dr Stephen Heap, a Baptist Minister and the national adviser on higher education to the Church of England.
