Award-winning mature student encourages others to consider university

Three mature students at Loughborough University have been presented with awards in recognition of their outstanding academic achievement.

Presented for the first time this year, the Mature Students Achievement Awards have been introduced to recognise the mature student who has achieved the highest academic marks in their first year in each of the University’s three faculties. The students all received £500.

One of the award winners, Paul Brack, is now encouraging other potential mature students to find out more about studying for a degree at a special open day being held on 4 November.

“University is hard work and requires good organisation skills, but it’s very rewarding and it’s a great opportunity to enhance your career prospects,” says Paul.

Mature students are those aged 21 or over when they start university. The Open Day will provide anyone interested in higher education with the opportunity to look around the University campus, find out about the courses on offer, and learn more about likely entry requirements, how to apply and the kinds of support available.

Before starting at Loughborough, Paul spent time after his A-levels as a volunteer missionary in the South of France for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He is now studying Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. “I chose that course,” he explains, “because I felt the pharmaceutical industry, particularly the research and development of new medicines, is of benefit to society as a whole.

“When I graduate I would like to work in research and development for a pharmaceutical company. I want to do a job that will really make a difference to people’s lives.”

Anyone interested in attending the Open Day, which is running from 10am until approximately 3pm, should contact Alex McPherson to book a place, Email: A.L.McPherson@lboro.ac.uk
