University awards honorary degrees in Beijing and Singapore

Three distinguished academics are to receive honorary degrees from Loughborough University at ceremonies being held in Beijing and Singapore.

On Sunday 30 August, President Gu Binglin, the President of Tsinghua University, will be presented with the award of Honorary Doctor of Science for his outstanding leadership in higher education in China and his exceptional contribution to research in the field of Physics.

At the same ceremony, which will take place at the Sofitel Hotel in Beijing, over 100 recent Loughborough graduates who live in China and surrounding countries will gather together to celebrate their academic achievements with their family and friends.

Then on Sunday 6 September, at the Shangri-la Hotel in Singapore, Professor Tan Chorh Chuan (President of National University of Singapore) and Mr Choo Thiam Siew (President of Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts) will be presented with honorary degrees.

Professor Tan Chorh Chuan will be presented with the award of Honorary Doctor of Science for his outstanding contribution to science, technology and education in Singapore.

Mr Choo Thiam Siew will be awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of Letters for his outstanding contribution to the arts and arts education in Singapore.

Some of Loughborough’s recent graduates who live in Singapore and surrounding countries will also be at the ceremony, along with students from PSB Academy in Singapore who will graduate with degrees in Business Studies or Business Studies with Human Resources Management from Loughborough University.

Professor Shirley Pearce, Vice Chancellor of Loughborough Univeristy, said: “We are delighted that President Gu Binglin, Professor Tan Chorh Chuan and Mr Choo Thiam Siew are to accept honorary awards from Loughborough University. It is a great privilege to be able to strengthen the links between our leading institutions.”
