British and NBA basketball player says Loughborough camp is best ever

Luol Deng

Britain’s best known basketball player Luol Deng has praised facilities and staff at Loughborough University where he is hosting his annual one-week basketball camp.

More than 260 young players aged 11-19 from across the country have flocked to the Luol Deng Basketball Camp – the brainchild of NBA Chicago Bulls player Deng, which teaches participants the intricacies of basketball whilst drumming home the importance of discipline, sportsmanship and a good education.

“The camp gives kids the opportunity to develop their basketball skills and learn something new about the game whilst having fun. But we also teach them about discipline and the importance of doing well at school,” explained Deng.

“This is by far the best and most organised camp we’ve run. The people are friendly and the food is great.

“Loughborough is in a great position geographically to attract kids from all over the country and because the facilities here are so great it complements everything we do. The training facilities are just as good as anything I’ve seen in the US. It’s a great place to be and we hope to return next year.”

Players have been put through a packed schedule of training and workshops during the five-day camp that gives them an insight into the life of a professional basketball player, and underlines the importance of health and nutrition.

The camp is widely recognized as one of the best in Europe and its mission is to teach the fundamentals of basketball, foster personal growth, encourage sportsmanship and promote the growth of basketball in Britain.

Matches and drill sessions have been hosted in three of the University’s sports halls and the hundreds of young basketball players and up to 100 staff have stayed full board in the on-campus student accommodation.

Loughborough events officer James Smith has been managing the camp on behalf of the University.

“We are delighted to be able to host the first Luol Deng Basketball Camp outside of London and to welcome so many young players onto campus,” he said. “The Deng camp is our latest high profile sports camp, continuing our tradition of hosting large sport-focussed events and working with top sportsmen and women. We’re glad Luol and his staff have enjoyed their time here and we hope to work with them again over the coming years.”
