Loughborough tops the BUCS points table for the 29th year

Loughborough Netball team celebrating their National title win

Loughborough University has retained its crown as top sporting University in the country by winning the 2008/09 British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Overall Points Table for UK universities.

The win sees Loughborough finish top overall within the national student competition framework for an unprecedented 29th year, with the women having collected the national trophy for the last 31 seasons.

Loughborough collected 5436 points during the year to finish an astounding 2383 points clear of its nearest rival - the University of Bath.

The students collected Championship titles in swimming, netball, lacrosse, hockey, football, athletics and canoeing as well as a series of Trophy wins and a flurry of top finishes in their respective leagues.

At the BUCS Championships in March this year, where Universities went head to head in the final knockout stages in 24 sports, Loughborough was represented by more than 400 students in 18 different disciplines.

Loughborough Students Athletic Union (AU), which oversees and supports students in BUCS competition, boasts over 4,500 members regularly competing in its 54 student-run sports clubs. AU President Rich Smith is quick to congratulate everyone who has helped Loughborough achieve further success this year.

“We are delighted to have continued our proud sporting tradition and finished top of the overall national student leagues for the 29th consecutive year,” he said. “To win the elite BUCS league table by such a margin shows our strength in depth across so many sports.

“It’s a testament to all our committed students who balance training and playing sport alongside demanding degrees, as well as the coaches and support staff who have played an integral role in helping us achieve this success.”

During 2008/09, 143 higher education institutions entered BUCS sporting leagues and competitions, all competing for points across 50 sports.

Chris Earle, Director of Sport at Loughborough added:

“The University is immensely proud of the achievements of our students who have contributed to this success.

“The consistently high standard of our performances in the sports arena are a reflection in the excellence of the work that goes on behind the scenes in our Athletic Union, Sports Development Centre and facilities management teams – all of whom make a significant contribution to our continued success in the BUCS competition”

Loughborough University will be awarded the BUCS Overall Winners trophy at the BUCS Ball on 3 September at Keele University’s Keele Hall.
