This Saturday (15 August) marks an historic event for Loughborough University’s footballers when the team competes in its first ever FA Cup match.

The students take on Lincolnshire side Sleaford Town in the extra-preliminary round of the national knockout competition which sees the final played at Wembley Stadium in May.

Loughborough are the only student side competing in this year’s FA Cup, sponsored by E.ON, having proven themselves with two strong seasons in non-league football, gaining promotion to the Midland Football Alliance and becoming the highest playing University team in the country.

With the start of term still six weeks away, students have been travelling from all over the country and from as far afield as Portsmouth and Kent to make training and the start of the league which successfully kicked off last Saturday (8 August) with a 1-0 win over Coventry Sphinx.

Head coach Tom Curtis hopes his young side will make the most of this weekend’s appearance.

“To play in the FA Cup is an awesome achievement for the club and is what we’ve been aiming for the last three years,” he said.

“Saturday’s an historic day for the club. It will be a difficult game, but to have got to this position in the first place is a significant achievement and I’ve urged the players to enjoy the day as best they can.

“The players have shown fantastic commitment during pre-season, and without their positive attitude and that of our team of dedicated student and local volunteers the club wouldn’t function.”

Loughborough play Sleaford Town away this Saturday, kick off 3pm.
