Historic race for Loughborough rower Relph

Monica Relph and Crew

Monica Relph and the victorious British crew

Loughborough 2012 sports scholar Monica Relph has become the University’s first ever student to win world rowing gold with an historic performance as part of a British women’s VIII.

Relph and her crew were also Britain’s first ever under-23 world champions in the women’s VIII, racing to victory at the annual World Championships in the Racice (Czech Republic) last month (23-26 July).

The team were one of three GB crews to medal at the four-day event, but the only one to win gold.

Relph, who has achieved top five finishes at the 2009 World Cup and 2008 World University Rowing Championships as part of smaller crews, joined British team mates Vicky Bryant, Jacqui Round, Victoria Thornley, Michelle Vezie, Emily Taylor, Leonora Kennedy, Rachael Jefferies and cox Zoe de Toledo for the historical final.

Britain led the race from the start and held off a charge from the USA crew in the final 300m to cross the line in first place.

“Loughborough University now has its first rowing World Champion - it is just amazing,” said Loughborough head rowing coach Mitch Rosenlund. “Monica deserves every bit of that gold medal, as do her fellow crew members, coaches and support staff. Well done to them all.”
