A self-weighing suitcase… Adjustable-heeled shoes… Designs of tomorrow on view today!

If you’ve ever struggled to weigh your suitcase before jetting off on holiday, then a Loughborough student may well have come up with the perfect solution.

Richard Taylor’s novel new suitcase design has an integrated self-weighing device, allowing users to weigh their luggage with ease – and without the need for bathroom scales!

Richard’s design is just one of hundreds that will be on display at this year’s Loughborough University Design and Technology Degree Show, called ‘Ideation’. Taking place from Friday 13 to Monday 16 June, the show will feature working prototypes, models and graphics of innovative ideas, produced by students who are graduating from one of the best product design courses in the UK.

Almost a hundred students will be exhibiting their final year projects, many of which have been developed in collaboration with companies such as Morphy Richards, Royal Mail, Hozelock and Mira Showers.

Other exhibits at this year’s show include:

A flashing indicator and brake light system for bikes, developed by Ben Webb, to improve cyclists’ visibility in the dark. Amber indicators are triggered to flash whenever the wearer raises their arm to give a hand signal, and a wireless transmitter activates a high-level, helmet-mounted brake light that mimics those now commonly found on cars.

A combined light and domestic smoke detector, designed by Lauren Whitby, that aims to help promote fire safety and make detectors a must-have design feature for the home.
An inventive new shoe design by Natalie Thorne that allows the wearer to adjust the heel size, providing the comfort of a low heel and the impact of a high heel in a single shoe. The upper part of the shoe can also be customised to transform its appearance depending on the wearer’s mood, the situation or practicality.

Paul Wormald, a senior lecturer in the Department of Deign and Technology, says the show will provide businesses and members of the public with a fascinating insight into both design and the designers of the future. “Yet again our students have developed some fabulous designs. I’ve no doubt that visitors to the show will be amazed by the students’ creativity and the outstanding quality of their work.”

Members of the public and industry are welcome to visit the Ideation Degree Show, which will take place in the Sir Denis Rooke building, in the Holywell Park area of the University campus. The event is open from noon to 5pm on Friday 13 June, and from 10am to 5pm thereafter up to and including Monday 16 June. Admission is free and advance booking is not required.
