University and businesses show maths adds up to a great career

Highflying employees from some of the country’s leading businesses will gather at Loughborough University this week to give school students the inside track on the importance of mathematics to their careers.

Employees from AstraZeneca, Capital One, Jacobs and Rolls-Royce will address around seventy Year 11 students from five local colleges at the Maths at Work Conference, being held on 16 December. Organised by the University’s Widening Participation Office, its Maths Education Centre and the Leicestershire Further Mathematics Centre, the conference will aim to show students that continuing to study mathematics – at A/S, A and degree level – could significantly benefit their future careers.

“This is a golden opportunity for young people to learn more about the importance of mathematics within the workplace. Participants will be inspired by enthusiastic presenters regarding the value of mathematics in their future careers,” said Dr Rod Bond from the University’s Mathematics Education Centre.

The day-long conference will also include a tour of the campus, led by some of the University’s undergraduate students, which will give the school students an insight into a university environment.
