Loughborough University researchers win prestigious medal

Staff from Loughborough University’s Department of Chemical Engineering have won a prestigious international award.

Professor Geoff Hankinson and Dr Barbara Lowesmith from the Department, Dr Mike Acton of Advantica Ltd, and Professor Geoff Chamberlain from Shell Global Solutions and Visiting Industrial Professor in the Department, have been presented with the Hutchison Medal for 2007 by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE).

The IChemE is an international professional membership organisation for people who have an interest in and relevant experience in chemical engineering. The Hutchison Medal is named in memory of past President, Sir Kenneth Hutchison, and is awarded for both practical and wide-ranging, philosophical or thought-provoking published papers.

The Loughborough team was presented with the medal for their research published in the Institution’s journal ‘Process Safety and Environmental Protection’. The paper was entitled: ‘An overview of the nature of hydrocarbon jet fire hazards in the oil and gas industry and a simplified approach to assessing the hazards’.

Professor Richard Wakeman, Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering said: “The team thoroughly deserve this medal. It is recognition of their hard work and expertise in this area.”
