AstraZeneca donates equipment to Loughborough University

Students at Loughborough University will find their work coming into better focus thanks to a donation from Loughborough-based pharmaceutical company, AstraZeneca.

Dr Bob Craggs from AstraZeneca (right) and Prof Chris Hewitt with the University’s new confocal microscope. The Discovery Bioscience department, based at the company’s research and development site at Charnwood, donated a powerful microscope and two machines capable of analysing single cells to the University.

Chris Hewitt, Professor of Pharmaceutical Engineering at the University, who took delivery of the instruments said: “This donation couldn’t have come at a better time for us, as we have just taken on 10 new PhD students. The equipment will help them with their analysis of cells”

Staff at AstraZeneca are encouraged to make sure no equipment is left unused for long periods of time and to offer surplus kit to other departments throughout the UK. If no company use can be found for an item within six months, donations to the community are considered. Using this route Dr Bob Craggs was able to offer the microscope and cell analysers to the University.
