University land plans being prepared

Loughborough University has started the process to develop a 23-acre plot of land purchased in April 2006.

The land, which is adjacent to the University, lies between New Ashby Road and the Holywell Park area of campus. It was acquired from 3M Health Care Limited in order to foster the University’s research and business agenda.

The University has now developed its thinking regarding use for the land and is starting to prepare proposals in order to submit an outline planning application for a Science and Enterprise Park later this year. Part of the land has always been earmarked for science park use in the Local Plan. The University would like to develop its science and enterprise links with industry both by attracting research and development activities from industry which require access to university expertise and providing facilities for its own researchers to develop their ideas. This will attract high quality employment to the town and encourage graduates to remain in the area.

The proposals provide for approximately 43,000 sq.m of development, with buildings of 2-3 storeys standing in extensive landscaped grounds. Part of the land, for which planning consent already exists, will be developed to accommodate the national offices of various UK sporting organisations. A design competition has been held to select a designer for the building and a full planning application will be submitted in due course.

Two consultation meetings have been held with key local organisations and residents groups. Details of the proposals are currently on display at Loughborough Library (Granby Street). They will be there for the next two weeks (until Friday 20 July). Comment forms are available and should be completed and returned to the University by Monday 23 July 2007.

Roy Hill, Director of Estates at the University comments: “Purchase of this land was an important acquisition for the University. Submitting an outline application for the site will be an important milestone in realising our ambitions to develop Loughborough as one of the country’s leading universities for collaboration with business and industries. We would urge local people to visit the library, view the proposals and tell us what they think so that we can take this into consideration before we finalise the outline planning application.”
