Science Summer School 2007

Loughborough University is offering 50 teenagers from across the East Midlands the opportunity to become students for a week and learn about studying science at its 2007 summer school.

The annual residential camp is targeted at current year 11 students and is taking place from Monday 2 July until Thursday 5 July. Its main aim is to give young people who have little or no experience of higher education the chance to spend time on the University campus and get a flavour of the many different aspects of university life.

As in previous years, the summer school will offer a range of academic tasters, and information about becoming a university student. Those taking part will also visit AstraZeneca, 3M Healthcare and BioKneX to learn more about careers within the science industry. Throughout the week the teenagers will be accompanied by current Loughborough University students, who will be able to share their own experiences of university life.

Loughborough’s Natalie Savage, who has organised the Summer School said: “Those attending the residential camp currently know little about studying at university and have been unable to draw on experiences of those around them for support and guidance. The time with us should help them make an informed choice about their own future and the options available to them”

The Science Summer School is an opportunity for these students to gain first hand knowledge of what university might be like and the exciting challenges presented by studying science subjects. Through the combination of academic sessions, science based industrial visits and social activities the teenagers will get a real taste of what life would be like as an undergraduate student.

The scheme is funded by the European Social Fund and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).
