Students’ mural brings a splash of colour to local school

A colourful mural by three Loughborough University students is helping to brighten up the day of staff and pupils at Ashmount School in Loughborough.

The mural, which is 16 feet long, is located at the front of the special education needs school and depicts a selection of the school’s activities. It was designed by James Baker, Tom Powell and John Pimperton, who are all studying Fine Art at the University’s School of Art and Design.

“We were asked by the head teacher, Sue Horn, to design a mural that would help to brighten the school’s appearance,” explains James. “We wanted to develop something that would be a celebration of both the school and of the children’s learning and interests, so we used the children’s posters and pictures which are pinned around the school as our inspiration. We’ve also made reference to the town of Loughborough through the buildings silhouetted in the background.”

Everyone at the school is delighted with the new artwork, says head teacher Sue Horn. “I think the mural is excellent. It provides a focal interest point, which is both exciting and bright. We wanted something vibrant to reflect the work within the school.”
As well as the mural, the students were also asked to replace the signs on and around the front of the school building.

“We used the same colour scheme and shapes as the mural, which we hope will give the school’s appearance a real lift. Visitors will hopefully get a great first impression of the school – and staff and pupils will enjoy a bright start to every day!” says James.
