Loughborough International Athletics match spectators have chance to win Radcliffe, Thompson signed memorabilia

Two lucky spectators at the Loughborough International Athletics match will leave with more than just the memory of a fantastic spectacle from some of Britain’s best athletes on May 20.

Each person through the gates will have the opportunity to win a signed t-shirt or athletics bib from either world marathon champion and record holder Paula Radcliffe or double Olympic gold medallist Daley Thompson.

Both signed the memorabilia on recent visits to the University.

“This is a great opportunity for somebody to own something that has been signed by two of Britain’s most famous athletes,” said University event manager Ben Aherne.

“Paula was a student here at Loughborough and after an impressive career on the track has become one of the most pre-eminent marathon runners around, which was highlighted by her world championships title in Helsinki in 2005.

“Daley, of course, is one of the greatest all-round athletes of all time something he proved by winning successive Olympic decathlon titles at Moscow in 1980 and Los Angeles in 1984.”

Each person through the gates at the LIA on Sunday will be given a numbered ticket. A draw will be made sometime through the day with the winners announced to the crowd.

“The LIA is the outdoors season opener in the UK and we already had an impressive list of athletes saying they were confirmed for the match so expected there to be a large crowd,” added Aherne.

“However the news that three members of Britain’s Athens Olympics gold-medal winning 4x100 metres relay squad have been selected to run for England has just topped it off.

“The chance to see Jason Gardener, Marlon Devonish and Mark Lewis-Francis in action should only add to the interest for athletics fans and with the news they could win something signed by Paula or Daley would only enhance their day.”

European Indoors 400m champion David Gillick of Ireland, Commonwealth 1500m champion Lisa Dobriskey and promising heptathlete Jessica Ennis have already been confirmed for the match, which involves teams from Loughborough University, England, Scotland, Wales, British Juniors and British Students.

The first field event begins at 1100 with the first track event starting at 1200.

Tickets are available from Loughborough University’s sports reception on 01509 226250. Adult tickets are £5, with concessions £3.
