European indoors champion Gillick to make outdoors debut at Loughborough International Athletics match

European Indoor athletics 400 metres champion David Gillick will make his 2007 outdoors season debut at the Accenture Loughborough International Athletics (LIA) match on 20 May.

Gillick produced a storming finish around the bend to pip Germany’s Bastian Swillims and retain his 400m title at the European Indoor championships in Birmingham in early March.

The 23-year-old Irishman, who moved to Loughborough University specifically to train with director of athletics coaching Nick Dakin, will run in the 200m at the LIA.

“David has been spending a bit of time in southern California doing a lot of training in the warm weather since the European Indoors,” said Dakin.

“He has worked very hard and produced some good times and is just looking forward to getting back out on to the track and into competition again.”

Gillick, who was named as European athlete of the month of February after producing a then world leading time of 45.91 seconds indoors at Dusseldorf, was nominated again for March after his title defence in Birmingham.

Despite Gillick beating his own Irish record with a time of 45.52 to win the title in Birmingham, he finished fourth in the combined public and media voting for the award, behind Britain’s Jason Gardner, who won his fourth successive European indoor 60m title.

Gillick joins Commonwealth Games gold medallist Lisa Dobriskey as two of the international standard confirmed starters for the event, which involves teams from Loughborough University, England, Wales, Scotland, British Students and the British junior squad.

The first field event begins at 1100 with the first track event starting at 1200.

Tickets are available from Loughborough University’s sports reception on 01509 226250. Adult tickets are £5, with concessions £3.
