Award scheme celebrates Loughborough’s environmental BEST

Loughborough staff and students’ commitment to environmental sustainability initiatives was recognised on 30 April at the BEST (Building Environmental Sustainability Together) Awards ceremony.

The BEST Awards, held for the first time last year, are a joint initiative between the University and Students’ Union and aim to acknowledge the individuals and groups who have shown real commitment to green issues.

At the ceremony, which took place at the Students’ Union, six awards were made as follows:

“I am both proud and highly honoured to receive the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Sustainability,” said Chris Spencer. “I feel that Loughborough Students’ Union and Loughborough University are the front runners in the country with a well motivated team. I hope that other students’ unions and universities will be as passionate and committed as we are in actively helping to protect the environment.”

The University and Union are both very committed to sustainability. Six years ago Loughborough switched to renewable sources for all its electricity and earlier this year a £1.3 million combined heat and power (CHP) plant became operational, enabling the University to generate its own electricity. In 2005 Loughborough became one of the UK’s first universities to achieve Fair Trade status.

Loughborough’s environmental efforts were recognised earlier this year at the Green Gown Awards, where the University was highly commended for its Energy Efficiency League – a scheme that runs between the University’s student halls of residence and rewards the hall that achieves the greatest reduction in energy consumption.
