IPTME wins third successive award

The head of the University’s Institute of Polymer Technology and Materials Engineering (IPTME) has won a prestigious award.

Professor Jon Binner has become the third member of staff in the department to be honoured by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IoMMM) in successive years.

In 2005 IPTME’s Professor Rachel Thomson was awarded the Rosenhain Medal for ‘distinguished achievement in any branch of materials science’, and in 2006 Professor

Marianne Gilbert received the Swinburne Award for ‘an outstanding contribution to the advancement and knowledge of any field related to the science, engineering or technology of plastics’.

Now Prof Binner has been awarded the Jenkins Medal in recognition of a ‘significant contribution which has enhanced the scientific, industrial or technological understanding of material processing or component production using particulate materials’.

Professor Binner said: “It is testimony to the quality of the academic staff in IPTME that three such prestigious awards can be received in consecutive years; this must be quite a unique achievement for any University materials department anywhere in the UK.”
