New era for community liaison arrangements

A new era for community liaison arrangements involving the University, College and wider Loughborough community begins today (Tuesday 24 April) with the launch of the Loughborough Campus and Community Liaison Group.

The purpose of the new group is to act as a forum within which all matters relating to the presence of the University and College in the Loughborough community can be discussed. Organisations represented alongside the University and College are the Students’ Union, Charnwood Borough Council, Leicestershire County Council, Leicestershire Constabulary and three local residents groups (Storer Area Residents Group, Ashby Road Estates Community Association and Nanpantan Residents).

Meeting quarterly, the group will be a consultative body where members will share relevant information and report matters of interest or note. The group will have no formal decision making capacity but will proceed by way of discussion and agreement where possible.

Liaison meetings have been taking place since the early 1990’s and the new group replaces two existing forums, the remit of which have gradually overlapped.

Over time it is hoped to recruit a representative of the private rented accommodation sector. There is scope for additional residents groups to join and new members can also be nominated through co-opted places.

Brian Hayes, Chief Executive of Charnwood Borough Council will join Shirley Pearce, Vice Chancellor of Loughborough University and other representatives at the launch event where they will formally sign up to the terms of reference for the new group.

Brian Hayes, comments: “A great deal has been achieved by the liaison arrangements that have existed so far and we very much hope that this good work with continue through the Loughborough Campus and Community Liaison Group.”

Shirley Pearce: Shirley Pearce added: “This new group will play a vital part in monitoring issues and developments and agreeing action where required. All members recognise the need for close communication and dialogue and I am sure that together we will be able to address the challenges that arise”
