Applications to Loughborough rise by almost twice the national average

The number of students applying to study full-time courses at Loughborough University has increased by 11%, according to the latest statistics released by UCAS today (14 February).

The rise, which is significantly greater than the national average of 6.4%, puts Loughborough towards the top of the applications table.

Loughborough’s senior assistant registar, Howard Jones, says the increase shows that demand for places at one of the country’s leading universities remains high.

“Applications to Loughborough have traditionally been strong, and it is pleasing to see such a significant increase for this year,” Mr Jones said.

“It is particularly gratifying that the rise is reflected across the board, with all three of the University’s faculties gaining increases in applications for 2007.

“Applicants to Loughborough are typically well qualified and of a high calibre. We look forward to welcoming a good number of them later in the year.”

Loughborough departments that have fared particularly well in applications include Computer Science (+35%), Physics (+29%), Design and Technology (+25%) and Civil and Building Engineering (+23%).

Ian Cairns, the University’s Director of Marketing, says that Loughborough’s high number of applications can be attributed to the all-round quality of its offering to students.

“Loughborough has strengths that really matter to students, which is reflected in our high rankings in national league tables,” said Mr Cairns.

“It is consistently ranked as one of the top universities for teaching, and its extensive partnerships with employers provide students with unparalleled opportunities to gain employment-based experience.

“Together with the Students’ Union, the University also provides a wealth of opportunities outside of the lecture room, as our recent award for the UK’s best student experience demonstrates.”
