Tony the Tiger says swimming is “Grrreat!”

Tony the Tiger, from Kellogg’s Frosties, will join around 200 children at Loughborough University pool on Sunday 16 December to launch a revised national programme to help children learn to swim.

The National Plan for Teaching Swimming has been developed by the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) to provide a template for ‘Learn to swim’ schemes around the country. The Plan takes non-swimmers through a ten stage learning process to achieve competence and confidence in the water. From January 2008, Loughborough University’s ‘Learn to Swim’ scheme will follow this Plan.

All children attending Sunday’s launch, which takes place from 10.30am to noon, will receive a goody bag and have their photo taken with Tony the Tiger. There will also be a fun ‘Floats and Inflatables’ session and a chance to try new activities including mini waterpolo and synchronised swimming.

Staff from the ASA and the University’s pool will be on hand to answer questions about the programme. Loughborough graduates Ros Brett, European Gold medallist, and Sarah Price, former Commonwealth champion and world record holder, will also be at the event to inspire Britain’s next generation of swimming talent.

“We want to get as many youngsters swimming as possible,” says Sam Pittham, manager of Loughborough University’s pool. “It’s a great, fun way of getting exercise and who knows, we may even start a future Olympic swimming champion on the path to success!”

To join in the fun, pick up a form from the University Pool reception, or call 01509 226200 for more information.
