Combating corruption in the Commonwealth

Representatives from 11 Commonwealth countries recently attended a training course at Loughborough University on combating corruption in infrastructure delivery.

The five-day intensive course was organised by the University’s Water, Engineering and Development Centre, in partnership with the Commonwealth Secretariat.

It covered topics relating to government work with the private sector, public integrity reform, whistleblowing, and anti-corruption programme design. The participants were drawn from business, government, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Commonwealth countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. They agreed to work together to share information and identify tools that would help end the misuse of power for private gain – the very definition of corruption.

“This first step represents an enormous change in the way that projects in the infrastructure sector will be handled,” said Professor Sohail Khan, the chief organiser of the event and a Research Director at WEDC.
