Loughborough University appoints Chief Operating Officer

Mr Will Spinks has joined Loughborough University in the newly created post of Chief Operating Officer. He took up the role on 1 October.

The new Chief Operating Officer post integrates some responsibilities of the University’s Registrar, who will retire at the end of 2007, and of the former Bursar’s post. As Chief Operating Officer Will Spinks will have responsibility for several key areas of the University’s activities, including the Sports Development Centre, Imago (the conference and events section), and the Marketing and Communications Office.

Commenting on his appointment, Will said, “I am delighted to have joined one of the country’s leading universities. I am looking forward to playing my part in the team which will build on Loughborough’s many achievements.”

After studying at the University of Warwick and at Georgetown University, Washington DC, Will joined ICI in 1980. He pursued a career in Human Resources at ICI and Zeneca, working in a number of businesses and functions in both the UK and the USA.

In 1999, on the formation of AstraZeneca, he was appointed the Vice President for Human Resources for Research and Development globally. In this capacity he helped to create a new, global R&D organisation with over 10,000 employees on nine major sites in five countries.

In 2001 he was appointed Site General Manager for AstraZeneca’s largest R&D site at Alderley Park, Cheshire.

Two years later he was appointed as Head of AstraZeneca’s newly formed UK Business Services organisation providing human resources, finance, purchasing, communications, SHE (safety, health and environment) and facilities management, and site services to all of AstraZeneca’s UK sites.

In the North West, Will was a member of the North West Region Council of the CBI and the North West Business Leadership Team. He chaired the Macclesfield Borough Economic Alliance and is a board member and former chair of Macclesfield Chamber of Commerce.

He also chaired Bollington United Junior Football Club, was on the management board of Bollington Leisure Centre and will remain a trustee director of the Bollington Initiative Trust.

Will said, “I’m now looking forward to playing an active community role in the Loughborough area.”
