Loughborough confirms its place amongst UK’s educational elite

Loughborough University has secured another top 15 ranking in national league tables, coming 13th in the Sunday Times University Guide 2007.

The results of this latest league table place the University firmly amongst the UK’s educational elite, following on from top 15 positions in The Guardian, The Good University Guide, and The Times Good University Guide.

Loughborough was also ranked 4th in the recently published 2007 National Student Survey – confirmation of the high quality learning experience the University provides for its students.

Last week Loughborough – in partnership with the Universities of Birmingham and Nottingham, and with support from the East Midlands Development Agency (emda) and Advantage West Midlands – was also chosen to host the new £1 billion national Energy Technologies Institute to develop cleaner energies.

Other indicators of Loughborough’s continuing success and growing popularity include recent UCAS applications statistics, which show an 11.2% increase in the number of students applying to study full-time undergraduate courses at Loughborough – a rise more than double the national average of 5.3% – and the THES award for the UK’s Best Student Experience, presented in 2006.

Professor Shirley Pearce, the University’s Vice Chancellor, said: “We are delighted to have risen again in the Sunday Times University Guide and to have secured top 15 placings in all league tables this year. It is a reflection on the quality and commitment of our staff and students and, coupled with our extremely strong position in the national student survey, is confirmation of Loughborough’s standing as one of the country’s leading universities.”

The Sunday Times league table is derived from measures of student satisfaction, teaching and research quality, ratings from head teachers’ and academic peer review, entrance qualifications held by new students, degree results achieved, student/staff ratios, graduate unemployment levels and university dropout rates.

Notes for editors:

  1. The Sunday Times University Guide 2007 was compiled using data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (Hesa), the National Student Survey, the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, the national funding councils, head teachers, peers and the 123 institutions themselves. Each university and college is ranked according to the total mark it achieved across nine distinct areas: student satisfaction; teaching excellence; head teachers and peer assessments; research quality; A/AS-level (or Higher/Advanced Higher) grades achieved by entrants; graduate employment and proportion of students entering graduate level jobs; percentage of first and 2:1 degrees awarded; student/staff ratios; and dropout rates.

  2. Loughborough is one of the country’s leading universities, with an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research, strong links with industry and unrivalled sporting achievement.

It is a member of the esteemed 1994 Group – a set of internationally recognised, research intensive universities – and has a reputation for the relevance of its work. Its degree programmes are highly regarded by professional institutions and businesses, and its graduates are consistently targeted by the UK’s top recruiters.

Loughborough is also the UK’s premier university for sport. It has perhaps the best integrated sports development environment in the world and is home to some of the country’s leading coaches, sports scientists and support staff. It also has the country’s largest concentration of world-class training facilities across a wide range of sports.

In the 2007 National Student Survey, the University was voted fourth in the UK, with 23 out of 29 of Loughborough’s subject areas being ranked in the top ten for overall satisfaction. Loughborough is also ranked in the top five of UK universities in national league tables and was named winner of the 2006 THES award for the UK’s Best Student Experience. In recognition of its contribution to the sector, the University has been awarded five Queen's Anniversary Prizes – an achievement bettered by no other university.
