Loughborough University study calls on health and safety professionals

Health and safety professionals working in manufacturing are being urged to take part in a new Loughborough University study.

The Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has commissioned the University’s Ergonomics and Safety Research Institute (ESRI) to investigate the effectiveness of risk assessments in the workplace.

The study, lasting 16 months, has been designed to explore the link between risk identification and risk control in the management of musculoskeletal injuries. For the first part of the study the research team want to learn about current risk assessment practice in the manufacturing industry, including who is undertaking musculoskeletal risk assessments and what tools they use to do them.

They are now asking health and safety professionals across the midlands to complete a short questionnaire to help clarify what is currently occurring in the workplace. Following this, organisations who have stated an interest in participating further in the study will be selected and invited to take part in evaluating the tools used in undertaking risk assessments. As an incentive these organisations will receive free professional training for eight of their employees from an IOSH accredited trainer.

Claudia Foster, the project coordinator, said: “We really would urge health and safety professionals to support this research. We appreciate that you are busy, but by contributing you will be providing critical information that will help make risk assessment more effective and simpler in the future. So why not get in touch and help us make workplace safety easier, more efficient and more effective. The questionnaire itself should only take a few minutes to fill in and any information you supply will be strictly confidential.”
