Superb ‘Real’ Varsity match taken by Loughborough

Loughborough University beat University of Bath 19 -11 in front of a sell-out 3,000 crowd at the campus on Friday night (March 17).

It was their second consecutive victory since the inception of the annual ‘Real’ Varsity match between the country’s two leading university’s for sport, following last year’s 21-7 win at Bath Rugby Club’s Recreation Ground.

The victory was not only a triumph for a side which included eight England Students and England age group representatives, but also for the University’s rugby programme, which played under newly-installed £75,000 lights for the first time.

Loughborough were victorious again in ‘Real’ Varsity match

The result rarely looked in doubt after the home side had taken a grip on the game midway through the first half and only a try in the final minute of the game made the score line closer. Bath’s James Gibson and Loughborough’s Greg Collet traded penalties to level the scores at 6-6 after 17 minutes.

But the play of the game took the home side 13-6 up in the 21st minute – a lead they never looked like letting slip. Collet faked a drop goal but kicked the ball out wide where his wonderfully weighted punt fell into the arms of Mike Melford, who dived over the line for an outstanding try.

Collet’s third and fourth penalties of the night put Loughborough 19-6 up with five minutes left, before Bath crossed the line in the corner with the final play of the game.
