Loughborough Students hockey coach appointed to England set up

Following an extensive interview process England Hockey has announced the appointment of Loughborough Students head coach David Ralph as England U21 Men’s Assistant Coach.

David brings a wealth of international experience to the position having won 118 caps for Scotland. He competed at the highest level for Scotland including three European Championships – Dublin 1995, Barcelona 2003 and Leipzig in 2005. He retired from international hockey this year at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

At Club level David competed in three European Club Championships (outdoor) for Scottish Club Kelburne, two European Indoor Club Championships for Old Loughtonians, and a further two European Indoor Club Championships as player/coach with Loughborough Students.

In October 2003 he took over as Loughborough Students Head Coach from Jason Lee, the current England and Great Britain Men’s Head Coach. He has guided the Students to 3rd spot in the England Hockey Super Cup in the last two years, and to a runners up spot in the England Hockey Cup in 2005.

On the indoor front the Students were National Champions in 2003, 2004 and 2005. In Europe they won the EuroHockey Indoor Challenge in 2004 and finished 3rd in the Indoor Trophy in 2005.

Performance Manager Peter Nicholson said: “David is a welcome addition to the current U21 management team of Bobby Crutchley and Andy Halliday. They have a key role in helping our young players achieve their full potential. Their first challenge will be the European Junior Championships in 2008 followed by the Junior World Cup in 2009.”
