Honorary degrees to be awarded at winter graduation ceremonies

At Loughborough University’s winter graduation ceremonies, which will take place on Monday 18 December 2006, honorary degrees will be conferred upon four distinguished persons in recognition of the outstanding contributions they have made to business, industry, education, sport and society.

At 10.30am Dr Peter Davies CBE – Chief Executive Officer, PERA – will receive the award of Honorary Doctor of Technology (Hon DTech), for his outstanding achievements in the field of innovation.

At the same ceremony, Director General Science and Innovation Sir Keith O’Nions will be presented with the award of Honorary Doctor of Science (Hon DSc), for his outstanding contributions both to engineering research and to engineering and science policy and administration.

Then at 2.30pm, Steve Bell – cartoonist, political illustrator and graphic satirist – will receive the award of Honorary Doctor of Letters (Hon DLitt), for his contributions to political illustration and illustration more generally, including the support of the undergraduate programme in Loughborough University School of Art and Design (LUSAD).

Julie Bradshaw MBE, World record-breaking long-distance and English Channel swimmer and part-time lecturer at the University, will also be presented with the award of Honorary Doctor of the University (Hon DUniv), for her contributions to charities.

At the ceremonies two members of the University will also be awarded the Loughborough University Medal – a special award created to mark outstanding service. Val Onsworth, secretary to the Registrar, will receive her award at 10.30am, while Bob Perridge, the University’s Maintenance Supervisor, will be presented with his medal at the afternoon ceremony.

The Loughborough University Medal was developed in 2000 to mark service for and on behalf of the University, and allows the unrecognised contributions made to University life to be acknowledged.
