Loughborough University offers a colourful morning of family fun

An exciting opportunity for family fun is taking place at Loughborough University on Saturday 7 October.

As part of Family Learning Week the University is organising an event called ‘Creating a Colourful Life’. A range of practical activities will be on offer designed to provide creative fun and learning at the same time. There will be the chance to discover the cool science of colour, get messy making paints and experimenting, use colour for forensic investigation and paint mugs and art to take home.

Taking place from 10am to 2.30pm, the event includes lunch and is free of charge! All ages are welcome and there are no restrictions as long as two different generations from the family are involved. Places are limited and are available on a first come first served basis.

Family Learning Week is organised by the Campaign for Learning. It takes place from 7-15 October and is an awareness campaign to draw people into learning in a relaxed and informal atmosphere, especially those who might not otherwise get involved. Last year an estimated 5000 organisations were involved with events from cookery classes to sculpture sessions.

‘Creating a Colourful Life’ is being organised by the University’s Widening Participation Team and the Department of Chemistry, with Charnwood Arts providing an ‘artist in residence’ to help families find inspiration. Widening Participation Officer, Kay Bridger said: “It’s usually the kids who have all the fun but this is the ideal opportunity for grandparents, mum’s and dad’s, carers, even aunts and uncles to get involved and do something creative together”.

The University’s Widening Participation Team is also organising the Mature Students’ Open Day on Wednesday 1st November. This event will provide anyone over 21 interested in higher education with the opportunity to look around the University campus, meet current students, and find out more about the courses on offer. They will also be able to find out about entry requirements, how to apply and the range of support available.

To book places or to find out more about either event please contact Diana Streeton in the Widening Participation Office on O1509 222488 or email:

In 2006 Loughborough celebrates the 40th anniversary of its University Charter, awarded on 19 April 1966 in recognition of the excellence achieved by Loughborough College of Advanced Technology and its predecessor Colleges. Loughborough University of Technology was renamed Loughborough University in 1996.
