Loughborough shortlisted for The Sunday Times University of the Year award
Loughborough has been shortlisted for this year’s Sunday Times University of the Year award, in recognition of its outstanding performance in the recent National Student Survey, its excellent record for teaching quality, and its strong performance in national indicators on research grants and contracts.
The announcement came as the newspaper published its University Guide 2005 on Sunday 2 October.
In its league table, the Sunday Times ranked Loughborough first for student satisfaction, reflecting the University’s rating in the recent National Student Survey, in which full-time students voted Loughborough their favourite university.
In teaching quality assessments conducted since 1995, where the Sunday Times ranked Loughborough second to Cambridge, 95% of Loughborough’s subject areas were rated excellent.
Loughborough was top last year in the national performance indicators on research grants and contracts per academic staff cost.
In the overall league table, Loughborough was ranked in 15th position of the 120 institutions listed.
“I am pleased that we were again shortlisted for the University of the Year award,” said Loughborough’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Sir David Wallace. “This was for an unprecedented third time since 1999, which emphasises the sustained progress that we are making. Over the last few years we have been consistently ranked in the top 15 universities, a great reflection on the quality and commitment of staff to make a difference for students and in research.”
The Sunday Times league table is drawn up by ranking each university and college according to the total mark it achieved across eight distinct areas: teaching quality and student satisfaction; head teachers’ assessment; research quality, A/AS-level grades achieved by entrants, graduate employment and proportion of students entering graduate level jobs, percentage of first and 2:1 degrees awarded, student/staff ratios and dropout rates.
