National Student Survey shows Loughborough to be in top flight of universities

Loughborough is one of the country’s top universities in terms of student satisfaction, the first National Student Survey (NSS), published today (22 September), has shown.

Loughborough’s overall average score was 4.3 (out of a maximum 5), placing it in equal fifth position out of the 128 institutions included in the survey, and as one of the top three universities in the country.

As part of the survey students were asked to rate their satisfaction, out of a maximum score of 5, in seven areas of their degree programme: teaching, assessment and feedback, academic support, organisation and management, learning resources, personal development, and overall satisfaction.

Of the seven categories assessed, Loughborough showed particular strength in ‘learning resources’ and ‘organisation and management’, where it was ranked equal first.

In the individual subject areas, Loughborough’s overall score for satisfaction places the University in first or equal first position nationally in five subject areas – medical science and pharmacy; physical science; electronic and electrical engineering; architecture, building and planning; and communications and information studies.

Civil, chemical and other engineering and computer science also had excellent results, gaining first or equal first position in five out of the seven categories assessed.

Commenting on the results, Professor Morag Bell, Pro Vice Chancellor for Teaching, said: "This survey is significant as, for the first time, it provides us with information about how finalists assess their institutions.

"We are delighted that Loughborough's overall results confirm our excellent record for quality in teaching and learning, and that students from many of our subject areas rate their courses so highly."

Full results from the survey are available on the new Teaching Quality Information (TQI) web site, launched today at www.tqi.ac.uk.

  2. The subject areas used do not map consistently onto the academic departments at Loughborough and the degree courses which we offer. In some subject areas, where the number of students or survey responses was small, there is insufficient data for a result for Loughborough to be published. Further detail on the degree courses included in each NSS subject area can be found at http://www.lboro.ac.uk/admin/ar/general/tqi/

The TQI web site is a collaborative project between the four UK funding bodies and the National Union of Students (NUS). It brings together key sources of official information about the quality of higher education in UK institutions, with a view to making more information available and accessible to university applicants and their advisers. The web site is intended to help potential students compare institutions and subjects and make more informed choices about where to study, and for the first time provides up to date feedback from institutions’ current students on the quality of their course.

  3. Loughborough has an established reputation for excellence in teaching and research, strong links with industry, and unrivalled sporting achievement. Assessments of teaching quality by the Quality Assurance Agency place Loughborough in the top flight of UK universities, and industry highlights Loughborough in its top five for graduate recruitment. Around 45% of the University’s income is for research. The University has been awarded four Queen’s Anniversary Prizes: for its collaboration with aerospace and automotive companies such as BAE Systems, Ford and Rolls Royce; for its work in developing countries; for pioneering research in optical engineering; and for its world-leading role in sports research, education and development.
