University’s Community Warden Scheme expanded

Loughborough University’s pioneering community warden scheme is being extended to the Herrick area of the town with the appointment of Louise Doherty as deputy community warden. The move follows the tremendous success of Adrian Bailey as community warden for the Storer and Burleigh parts of town.

As deputy community warden, Louise will liaise with and between students and other residents in the area in order to promote good relationships between the groups. She will also offer support, advice and information to students, respond to any incidents and deal with disciplinary issues that may arise.

Louise, who lives in the Herrick area herself, works in the undergraduate admissions office at the University. She was a student at Loughborough in the early 1980s and has lived and worked in the town for the last 13 years. She has a keen interest in the community where she lives and is already liaising with other residents in the area.

The Herrick area covers some 30 plus streets between Forest Road, Epinal Way, Shelthorpe Road and Victoria Street, and the Kingfisher Estate (see full list below). During the 2004/2005 academic year this area was home to approximately 500 students.

Commenting on the new appointment, Loughborough University’s Registrar, John Town said: “There has been a tremendous positive reaction to the role of warden from both the permanent residents and students. We are pleased to be able to expand the service in this way and demonstrate the University’s ongoing commitment to supporting students living off campus and the communities in which they live.”

The community warden service is also joined by Tulay Kaplankiran as sub warden for the Storer and Burleigh area. Tulay, will help and support Adrian Bailey with his work as warden. She is a replacement for Jeanette Rasumussen who recently completed her postgraduate research.

From Croydon in Surrey, Tulay is currently studying for a Masters degree in criminology and criminal justice in the Social Science department at the University, having graduated with a BSc in Sports Science earlier in the summer. As an undergraduate Tulay lived in the Storer area and her interest in supporting this community stems from that time. Like Adrian, she remains a resident of the area.

Louise and Tulay will report to Adrian Bailey. Welcoming them to their positions Adrian said: “The role of community warden is unique in this country as far as we know. I am delighted to be joined by Louise and Tulay and look forward to working with them to be of service to those living in the Storer, Burleigh and now, Herrick areas of town.”
