Loughborough University swimmer takes bronze at World Championships

Loughborough University swimmer Caitlin McClatchey took Great Britain’s first medal on the opening day of the World Swimming Championships in Montreal.

Swimming in the 400m freestyle McClatchey, a first year Politics student, recorded a time of 4:07.25 to secure bronze behind Laure Manadou of France and Ai Shibata of Japan.

In a tight race which saw Manadou complete the first half of the race in under world record pace, McClatchey fought hard over the closing stages to claw back the deficit and to finish less than one second behind the winner.

McClatchey said: “I tried to focus on swimming fast. I saw Manadou in front of me and knew I had to get close to her. I was never going to give up.”

Coincidentally, McClatchey won the medal in the same city as her uncle won Olympic bronze in 1976, and to replicate her family’s former glory was very much in her mind.
