Loughborough University research aims to protect UK infrastructure from natural and manmade disasters

A new project aimed at improving the protection of the built environment from natural and manmade disasters was recently launched by Loughborough University.

The study is being led by the University’s Innovative Manufacturing and Construction Research Centre (IMCRC) and has been funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). It will assess how a safe, secure and sustainable built environment can be achieved by reducing the frequency and impact of natural and manmade disasters that result in damage to infrastructure, built assets and loss of human life.

The project will develop a decision support framework to assist built environment professionals, such as architects, urban planners and civil engineers, and other relevant stakeholders with responsibility for event management.

Dr Lee Bosher, who is based in the University’s Department of Civil and Building Engineering, is leading the project. He said: “There is growing concern for the safety and security of the UK’s civil infrastructure in relation to natural and manmade disasters. Safeguarding the future requires the multi-disciplinary expertise of professionals involved in the design, planning and construction of our built environment; particularly if we are to ensure that safeguards have the long-term vision to not only protect our generation, but future generations.”

The research team would welcome the views and opinions of professionals involved with all aspects of the construction industry in relation to the ways in which the industry could contribute towards the development of a safer and more secure built environment in the future. If you would like to obtain more information about the work please contact Dr Bosher by emailing L.Bosher@lboro.ac.uk
