Loughborough European Athletics Meeting offers key opportunity for British athletes

Australian sub ten second sprinter Patrick Johnson, and Loughborough graduate and international athletics star Lee McConnell will be among the athletes lining up for this year’s Loughborough European Athletics meeting, which takes place on Saturday 16 July.

The event will provide British stars with an opportunity to claim qualification marks for the major championship of the year, the IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, just ahead of the deadline.

The Loughborough European Athletics meeting has grown out of the Loughborough International Development meet, which, since it started in 1999, has staged a 300m Hurdles world record for Chris Rawlinson and a British 2,000m steeplechase record for Tara Kryswicki. The meeting is now affiliated to the European Athletics Promotion circuit, which operates twelve meetings across the continent, with around 200 athletes from 18 countries taking part.

McConnell, a Loughborough Sports Scholar and European 400m Bronze medallist, will take on US Trials finalist Tanisha Mills in her new event of 400m Hurdles. Loughborough-based former European 400m runner Iwan Thomas will also include the meeting in his late start to the 2005 season, as he seeks Welsh Commonwealth Games selection.

Other British stars in the meeting include Hammer thrower Shirley Webb who looks set to take on American Amber Campbell, who recently secured her World Championship place in finishing 3rd in the US trials. On the Track, Damian Greaves, Britain’s fastest sprint hurdler of 2005, will meet Nottingham’s Olympian Andy Turner in the men’s 110m Hurdles.

The Men’s Hammer will open proceedings at 11.30am, with track events starting at 12.30pm. Tickets are available on the day, priced £4 for adults and £2 for concessions. Further information about the event is available from Ben Aherne, Tel: 01509 226120.
