University to honour distinguished figures

At Loughborough University’s summer graduation ceremonies, which will take place from Thursday 14 to Tuesday 19 July 2005, honorary degrees will be conferred upon ten distinguished persons, in recognition of the outstanding contributions they have made to industry, academia, business, sport, the arts and society.

Approximately 3,000 students will receive their awards at the same ceremonies, which will be broadcast live on the University’s web site at www.lboro.ac.uk/graduation

Honorary degrees will be awarded as follows:

Thursday 14 July at 10.30am

Paul McCreesh
Founding and current director of The Gabrieli Consort and Players
Honorary Doctor of Letters (Hon DLitt)
For outstanding services to classical music

Professor Duncan Dowson
Fellow of the Royal Society and The Royal Academy of Engineering, and Visiting Professor at Loughborough University
Honorary Doctor of Science (Hon DSc)
For outstanding contributions to engineering science and the engineering profession/society, and his support for Loughborough University

At the summer ceremonies two members of the University will also be awarded the Loughborough University Medal – a special award created to mark outstanding service. Viv Green from the University Arts Centre will receive her award at 3pm on Friday 15 July, while Jo Pearson, formerly of the Sports Development Centre, will be presented with her medal at 10.30am on Monday 18 July.

The Loughborough University Medal was developed in 2000 to mark service for and on behalf of the University, and allows the unrecognised contributions made to University life to be acknowledged.

Notes to editors

  1. Members of the media are welcome to attend the graduation ceremonies, which will take place in the New Sports Hall on the University campus. There will also be opportunities for interviews, photography and filming of the honorary graduates in the Sir John Beckwith Centre for Sport (Lecture Theatre) thirty minutes prior to the start of each ceremony. You are asked to access the campus via the main University entrance on Epinal Way. Please inform the Public Relations Office on 01509 222224, in advance, if you wish to attend.
