Loughborough University staff help raise funds for breast cancer research

Two Loughborough university staff are hoping to raise hundreds of pounds for breast cancer research by taking part in the annual Playtex Moonwalk.

The event is organised by Walk the Walk, a grant making charity dedicated to raising vital funds for breast cancer research and cancer care. It is the world’s only power walking marathon and takes place in London at night, with all the participants wearing decorated bras to raise awareness for breast cancer.

This will be the first time Maria Ward and Susan Taylor, who are both based in the University’s Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering, will have taken part in the Moonwalk, which is being held on June 18.

Maria said: “I first heard about the Moonwalk last year when I saw a TV programme about it and I thought it was an excellent way to raise money for such a worthy cause.

“My own reason for taking part this year is twofold - firstly, I have immediate members of family who have suffered with breast cancer, and secondly, there isn’t a person you speak to who doesn’t know someone who has been effected by breast cancer, be it family, friend or colleague.”

After deciding to take part Maria mentioned it to Susan, who also thought it was a brilliant idea and agreed to do it as well. Both of them have been training hard for the event – walking several miles each week in preparation for the marathon.

If any one would like to sponsor Maria and Susan they can email them at M.Ward@lboro.ac.uk or S.S.Taylor@lboro.ac.uk
